Book design for Not Contagious—Only Cancer, a novel by Miriam Ching Yoon Louie
with illustrations by Nguyen Louie
Rabbit Roar (April 2016)
Full-color cover and black & white interior
I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with Korean Chinese American writer Miriam Ching Yoon Louie on the design on her first novel, which features illustrations by her daughter, Nguyen Louie. The mother/daughter team is self-publishing the book under their own independent press.
My journey with the cover was to find ways to let the text be easeful around Nguyen’s stunning artwork. For the interior, I spent time finding a font to match the wit and humor of Miriam’s writing. I ended up going with Merriweather and Merriweather Sans paired with a wider letting to allow the text to breathe and increase its readability.
Initially I tailored the design for the advanced review copy, which went to press in November 2015. Several months later, I made the necessary updates for the market printing.
